First aid course
73 steps

In-game tutorial covering vitals, limbs, bleeding, and the health panel.

  1. Step 1

Welcome to the First Aid Course. We will go over your body, some injuries and how to treat them.

Wrong action: Wrong spot. Use it on your CHEST.

  2. Step 2

Open the health panel. You can bark at me to skip through this part.

Wrong action: Chest. Your thorax. You used it in the wrong spot... Use it on your CHEST. You want to defibrillate your heart... Which is located in your chest. How did you even get to this point?

  3. Step 3

It's time to start paying attention to the big panel to the left. It might be overwhelming for a while, but we'll touch on the more important things.

  4. Step 4

This is your brain integrity. When your brain dies, you die. Today you'll learn how to keep IT alive.

  5. Step 5

This is your consciousness, or how aware of your surroundings you are.

  6. Step 6

This is your total pain. It usually goes down by itself over time.

  7. Step 7

This is your blood volume. It will go down as you bleed it out, eventually leading to death. Consider 2.5L to be around the lethal limit.

  8. Step 8

This is your rate of bleeding. Fortunately, you're not bleeding right now, so there's nothing displayed.

  9. Step 9

This is your immunity, a metric of how capable your immune system is at defending your body from infection.

  10. Step 10

This is your stamina. Physical exertion will lower it.

  11. Step 11

This is your respiratory rate. Your oxygen will lower if you don't breathe enough.

  12. Step 12

This is your absorbed radiation. Don't ask what that is, just know that more than zero means trouble.

  13. Step 13

This is your heartrate. You'll want to keep this above 0.

  14. Step 14

This is your blood pressure. Don't let it get too high or too low.

  15. Step 15

This is your blood oxygen, also referred to as SpO2.

  16. Step 16

This is an ECG. It visualizes your heart rhythm. Get used to it, as you'll stare at it often.

  17. Step 17

Lastly, this is the limb-specific health panel. Most of it is pretty self explanatory, so we won't cover it for now.

  18. Step 18

...It's a lot, but you can just check your moodles at any time to learn most of these. Don't worry about it too much.

  19. Step 19

We will now get to some common injuries.

  20. Step 20

Bleeding is likely the most common thing you will encounter. It risks infection, and more importantly, lowers your total blood volume.

  21. Step 21

Your brain needs oxygen to live. To get oxygen, it needs a sufficient amount of flowing, oxygenated blood.

  22. Step 22

Here's some dressing. You know how to use it, fix your bleeding.

  23. Step 23

Take a look at your blood pressure. Normally it should stay around 120/80.

  24. Step 24

Blood pressure is directly affected by your heart rate, blood volume and blood vessel constriction/dilation.

  25. Step 25

In crisis scenarios, survival boils down to making sure your blood pressure stays at a safe level and that your heart keeps beating.

  26. Step 26

I am now removing your blood. Keep an eye on your blood pressure.

  27. Step 27

Your blood pressure is now really low, forcing your heart to compensate by speeding up.

  28. Step 28

This only goes so far, though. With really high heart rates or really low pressures, something called FIBRILLATION will start.

  29. Step 29

Fibrillation is the process of your heart rhythm getting more erratic until it stops. It kills in about two minutes.

  30. Step 30

You might notice an arrhythmia moodle in the bottom left. This is a sign of said fibrillation.

  31. Step 31

This is an Automated External Defibrillator. It resets your fibrillation to zero, stabilizing you for a while.

  32. Step 32

Use it on your chest and follow the steps it gives you. Good luck.

  33. Step 33

    Congrats! You lived.

  34. Step 34

Now, I want you to notice something. Look at your ECG.

  35. Step 35

We will sweep your heart through all stages of fibrillation. I want you to look at how the rhythm changes with it.

  36. Step 36

Do you see how it becomes distinctly wavey at high fibrillation?

  37. Step 37

This is a manual defibrillator. It's similar to the AED, but can fail if used wrong. Use it on your chest.

  38. Step 38

To use it correctly, you must match the power level to how far fibrillation has progressed.

  39. Step 39

This means that if arrhythmia just started, you set the power level low. If your heart is seconds from stopping, you set it high.

  40. Step 40

You can determine this using the ECG and power estimation visible here. The better you align the power level, the higher chance of it working.

  41. Step 41

Try doing that. Set power, charge then shock until your arrhythmia goes away. You'll get it eventually. Try using the ECG and power estimation.

  42. Step 42

Lets say something goes horribly wrong. Wear this, then open the health panel.

  43. Step 43

Your heart is no longer beating. The only thing keeping you conscious is the autopump you just put on. This is the worst case scenario.

  44. Step 44

Defibrillators can fix this, but it'll take a while. There's a better way.

  45. Step 45

Epinephrine is a special drug that can restart your heart, found in combat pens. Inject it.

  46. Step 46

    Good as new.

  47. Step 47

Theres something notable that isn't shown in the health panel, that being blood viscosity.

  48. Step 48

Blood viscosity is simply how thick or diluted your blood is. Both extremes can cause issues, but extremely thick blood is more dangerous.

  49. Step 49

Extremely thick blood can cause a Pulmonary Embolism, which will damage your thorax. Severe damage to the thorax will impair and eventually stop your breathing.

  50. Step 50

To break the clot down, use streptokinase.

  51. Step 51

Nicely done, but lets see what happens if your thorax did fail.

  52. Step 52

You must increase your thorax muscle health to breathe again. This bruise kit does just that - use it on your thorax.

  53. Step 53

Back in working order. Low respiration will lower your SpO2, which will eventually cause unconsciousness, fibrillation and death.

  54. Step 54

One more thing to note about circulation is high blood pressure, or hypertension. It's usually more manageable, but can still be very dangerous.

  55. Step 55

The main danger is the risk of stroke if hypertension becomes too severe. Try not to let your blood pressure go above 180/120.

  56. Step 56

You'll feel a lot of this out with experience. You will now be given some supplies. Bark at me with [B] when you're ready to move on.

  57. Step 57

We will now take a look at some more miscellaneous injuries.

  58. Step 58

Dislocations are a common injury, usually acquired from bad falls. Dislocated limbs cause a lot of pain when used.

  59. Step 59

You can fix dislocations by hand. Try it.

  60. Step 60

You need to hit the joint back into place. Gain some speed with your hand, then [LEFT CLICK] over the joint to hit it hard.

  61. Step 61

Fractures are similar to dislocations, but are more severe and need either time or special tools to fix.

  62. Step 62

A splint is a very simple, yet effective way to treat a fracture. Put this splint on your broken hand.

  63. Step 63

Neat. Splints speed up the healing of a fractured limb significantly. Putting dressing on the limb would also help slightly.

  64. Step 64

Your limbs stop functioning when their muscle health nears zero, making it so you, for example, can't hold things with the respective limb.

  65. Step 65

You can switch which hand you use as your main in the bottom right of the health panel. Try it. Note that you're not ambidextrous.

  66. Step 66

Severe pain is one of the most debilitating ailments you can get.

  67. Step 67

It immobilizes you, quickly worsens mood and can make you pass out from shock.

  68. Step 68

Luckily for you, there's a pretty simple way to treat it.

  69. Step 69

Opiates quickly reduce pain across your entire body when used. Inject the entire thing and see.

  70. Step 70

    BOO!

  71. Step 71

    That went away quickly, right?

  72. Step 72

Be careful with opiates - you can overdose on them easily, or go into withdrawals after. Naloxone and naltrexone can help with opiate abuse.

  73. Step 73

This concludes the First Aid Course. We could cover more, but we believe you can safely figure out other afflictions. You may return to your assigned room.

Crafting tutorial
29 steps

How recognition, blueprints, and the crafting panel work in a run.

  1. Step 1

Welcome to the Crafting Course. Today, we will cover the details of procuring items and show certain common workflows.

  2. Step 2

Almost everything you see is real matter and not trash.

  3. Step 3

You can harvest metal from scrap piles and traps, wood from wood structures, foliage from plants, etc.

  4. Step 4

Your objective will be to create a specified item using the resources given to you.

  5. Step 5

We will assume you know the bare basics of crafting. Create a foliage bag using the following materials. Use the reset button if you make a mistake.

  6. Step 6

First steps. Nicely done. Getting a container should always be your first goal.

  7. Step 7

An important thing to note is that you can use items near you on the ground for crafting. Bark at me with [B] once you've fully absorbed this information.

  8. Step 8

Lets try again with the same resources. Make a full dressing this time. You can drag any item onto the crafting button to see what recipes it can be used in.

  9. Step 9

Nicely done. Dressings are very cheap to make and are crucial for your survival. They should be your priority right after getting a container.

  10. Step 10

Important note - you can pin a recipe to have it permanently highlighted in the corner, using the button in the bottom right of the crafting menu. Pin the recipe for a flimsy knife.

  11. Step 11

Lets add some scrap and wood to the mix. Create a flimsy knife using these resources. You can merge items in the inventory.

  12. Step 12

Nicely done. Something to note is that you can favourite items to prevent them from being used in crafting recipes. You'd do this for stuff like bags, to not rip them up by accident.

  13. Step 13

Press [F] on the flimsy knife you just made to favourite it.

  14. Step 14

Now, try making a sterilized dressing using these items. Remember you can rip certain bags and clothing items via crafting.

  15. Step 15

Nice. You might've noticed we made your INT level go up for this test.

  16. Step 16

Crafting ability is tied to your intelligence level. You might've noticed that every recipe has its own INT requirement.

  17. Step 17

You gain INT whenever you use a blueprint or make a recipe for the first time.

  18. Step 18

You can make recipes that are up to 3 INT higher than your current INT, with progressively worse results.

  19. Step 19

1 INT higher has a 50% chance of damaging the resulting item. 2 INT, 50% chance of fully wasting material, and at 3 INT, you also damage yourself slightly.

  20. Step 20

You have enough INT to make a machete now. Do that.

  21. Step 21

Clever little fella, aren't you. You can further upgrade your tools with, for example, titanium alloys. Making digging tools is useful too.

  22. Step 22

Lets move onto food-related crafts. Most of them require a campfire.

  23. Step 23

Boil the groundwater into clean water. You'll need to make a canteen to collect it, and a campfire to boil it.

  24. Step 24

    Nicely done.

  25. Step 25

    Make some pemmican.

  26. Step 26

Well done. We will move on to your final crafting challenge now.

  27. Step 27

Make a mini laser drill and a battery to put inside of it. This is your final objective for today.

  28. Step 28

    Well done!

  29. Step 29

This concludes the Crafting Course. Hopefully you can put into practice the knowledge you have attained. You may return to your assigned room.

Movement & controls
68 steps

Core controls for moving, interacting, and surviving early depth.

  1. Step 1

Welcome to the final revisional training course.

Wrong action: You... Used the entire thing. In the wrong spot...

  2. Step 2

We will go over all the basics you will need to know for the next experiment you will participate in.

Wrong action: Lets just... Imagine you did it correctly.

  3. Step 3

Please walk towards the Training Armature Device. [A]

  4. Step 4

    Again. [D]

  5. Step 5

    You can walk. Impressive!

  6. Step 6

[SPACE] to jump. Hold to jump higher. You can jump off of walls too.

  7. Step 7

Make your way to the Training Armature Device.

  8. Step 8

    Agile little thing, aren't you.

  9. Step 9

Now, let's go over holding things.

  10. Step 10

Item interactions are done with [RIGHT CLICK]. Click on yourself to see your inventory, click away to close.

  11. Step 11

Here's something for you to play with. [RIGHT CLICK] and drag it onto yourself, then a slot to pick it up. You can hold [CONTROL] to see item labels, making it easier to locate them.

  12. Step 12

Neat. You can also use the item from the inventory. Drag it into the center to use it and continue.

  13. Step 13

Tastes amazing, doesn't it? You should eat the entire thing now.

  14. Step 14

    You really WERE hungry...

  15. Step 15

Lets try something else. Here's another thing to play with.

  16. Step 16

You have six main slots to put things in. Two hands, one mouth, three slots on your back.

  17. Step 17

Put this in one of your hands.

  18. Step 18

Certain tools are usable from your "Main hand". Put the rake there and try swinging it with [LEFT CLICK].

  19. Step 19

You really are fighting the ghosts now... Well done!

  20. Step 20

You can also quickly swap whatever's in your hands by pressing [Q]. Try it!

  21. Step 21

Doing things at a range is also a very useful skill. Hold [T] to throw whatever's in your main hand. Aim for the target we just made!

  22. Step 22

    Marvelous aim!

  23. Step 23

Lets get that rake back into your hands now.

  24. Step 24

You can dig through things by swinging at them. This will exhaust you fast, but is useful when done sparingly.

  25. Step 25

Dig over to the other side. Hold [S] to crouch down.

  26. Step 26

Some conditions like pain or exhaustion will take a while to go away. Speed up time [1-3] to make them go by faster.

  27. Step 27

    All rested.

  28. Step 28

We will now go over the basics of first aid. Please hold still.

  29. Step 29

Ouch! Your arm's hurt and bleeding! Lets check it out. Open the health panel with [R] or the heart button.

  30. Step 30

Hover over the hurt limb to see more info.

  31. Step 31

Decently sized puncture wound. Good news - you're going to fix it!

  32. Step 32

Here's some dressing. Mouse over it while holding [SHIFT]. It says "Usable in health panel".

  33. Step 33

Pick it up, then open the health panel.

  34. Step 34

[RIGHT CLICK] drag the dressing over the damaged limb.

  35. Step 35

Time for some physical work. [LEFT CLICK] wrap the dressing around! For testing purposes, it's infinite.

  36. Step 36

You're saved! For now, at least. You should always have some dressings on you. They save lives.

  37. Step 37

Shucks. Looks like that wound got infected! (Normally you'd only find out a while later.)

  38. Step 38

Another important medicine! Some antiseptic, read what it does if you wish. Pick it up and open the health panel.

  39. Step 39

Same story as before. Apply the antiseptic to the infected site.

  40. Step 40

Neat! Do this every few minutes to make the infection disappear. The arrow on the icon shows if it's regressing or progressing.

  41. Step 41

You really don't want to ignore infections; They are lethal if left to progress. Being well fed and in good shape will slow them down.

  42. Step 42

More detailed health info is provided in the First Aid Course. You can do it later if you wish.

  43. Step 43

    Take a look at this.

  44. Step 44

Trash bag! You should be very familiar with it. We've seen your kind sleeping in them sometimes.

  45. Step 45

It's a container, meaning it extends how many things you can have on you. Try dragging another item into it.

  46. Step 46

Wow, it's stored inside! Now [RIGHT CLICK] the bag and pull the item back out.

  47. Step 47

Well done. Containers are extremely useful to have, keep an eye out for any.

  48. Step 48

Here's something new. See if you can figure out how to put it on.

  49. Step 49

Nice! Wearables work outside of the normal inventory slots. This one can also have stuff put in it!

  50. Step 50

Try putting the empty trash bag into the backpack you're wearing. You can put empty containers inside others!

  51. Step 51

Procuring things on your own is a very useful skill.

  52. Step 52

Open the crafting menu by pressing [C] (or the button).

  53. Step 53

You'll make a foliage bag. To do that, you'll need to make two canvases and one rope. We have given you some foliage to do so.

  54. Step 54

Recipes you can make are at the top of the list highlighted in white. Click on the rope recipe, then on the rope icon in the top right.

  55. Step 55

Nice. Halfway there. Make the canvases now.

  56. Step 56

When you have both canvases and the rope on you, make the foliage bag.

  57. Step 57

Well done! You can also switch between recipe categories, or use the search bar. You'll get more info in the Crafting Course.

  58. Step 58

Lets take a quick look at the health panel again.

  59. Step 59

Look up in the top right. Those are your skills. In order, Strength, Resilience and Intelligence.

  60. Step 60

Strength is your amount of muscle mass. It mainly improves your attacks and carrying capacity.

  61. Step 61

Resilience is your physical endurance and mental fortitude. It makes you more resistant to pain and tiredness.

  62. Step 62

Intelligence defines your knowledge. It affects what you can craft, recognize, trader interactions and defibrillator usage.

  63. Step 63

You can hover over either of the skills to learn more.

  64. Step 64

Strength and Resilience can be additionally increased by working out. Try it, using the button in the lower right.

  65. Step 65

You might've also noticed the nap button right under exercise.

  66. Step 66

Sleep is important for recovering your energy. We made you a little bed to sleep on, try napping there!

  67. Step 67

The surface on which you sleep matters! Rubber is especially comfy, while rocks are particularly harsh. It's good to give your back a break sometimes.

  68. Step 68

This concludes your final revisional training. You may now return to your designated room.
